Herbert Marshall Howe, physician and capitalist, was born in Roxbury, Mass. on 16 July 1844 to Mark Antony Dewolfe and Elizabeth (Marshall) Howe. As a child he was educated at the Rectory School in Hamden, Conn. During the Civil War he served as an acting medical cadet in Philadelphia. He received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1865.
